  • Developmental editing addresses the foundation of the manuscript—structure, organization, clarity, and overall effectiveness. Line and copy editing come later and focus on sentence-level issues such as flow, word choice, consistency, and grammar, once the larger pieces are in place.

  • Generally, no. Proofreading is the final quality check meant to catch small errors after a manuscript has already been edited. Without prior editing, proofreading alone isn’t very effective—and often isn’t worth the investment—because it doesn’t address deeper issues that can undermine the work.
